Final reflection

 
I have thoroughly enjoyed making this blog, reflecting on my interactions with technology in my centre and also the feedback from the ladies in my group. I have learnt so much from these activities I was involved with, things that I never would have thought connected with technology. I always thought technology was electrical things that you plugged into a wall but the readings and the other blogs I have read showed me how technology is all around us – digital and non digital.

 I particularly liked that a recurring theme throughout the blogs was the tuakana teina relationships at work, where children worked together and helped each other out. I believe this links to the contribution strand in Te Whariki stating that “children experience an environment where they are encouraged to learn with and alongside others” (Ministry of Education, 1996, p. 70).

 Talay & Ongan (2005) suggests that “technology has gained acceptance in education for young children as being a tool, a medium for providing possibilities and opportunities for children and is viewed as a resource for encouraging children to make meaning and to engage in life-enhancing relationships” ( p.226). I agree with this statement as I saw throughout my experiences that each piece of technology provided different aspects of learning. Also through my new and growing understanding of technology I’m conscious that I can help bring awareness of how awesome it can be for children to learn about things in life through technology.  

I enjoyed all three activities but I especially loved being part of the clock experience. It wasn’t until after I had been involved and looked back and reflected on it I realized how much technology was involved in the experience. From the clock to the carpentry tools to the digital camera, there were quite a few aspects of technology in this activity that was at work. Smorti (1999) agrees with this stating that teachers often are already using the tools and providing opportunities of technology. The feedback I got from this was really good and gave me ideas of how to extend on this activity by showing other methods of telling the time such as a digital clock, stop watches and egg timer etc.

The video was a really awesome activity to do as I loved to see the concentration on the children’s faces while they discovered something new. I also loved this as I felt it was an empowering activity for the children to make discoveries for themselves and to try to fix problems they encountered. Ministry of Education (1996) states that children are supported in an environment where their problem solving skills are encouraged and developed.  The feedback from my experience has inspired me to find more unused equipment for children to dismantle and investigate the workings of them. Then possibly research it further through books and the internet if the children were inspired to take it further.

The cash register was interesting as it brought up memories of my childhood and how I always wanted to play with a cash register and Marisa mentioned the same thing. Therefore I think it is so awesome that the children now can have hands on experience with technology like this at a young age. Not only was it an activity that children could relate this technology to their world in the community but it also helped to further their mathematical skills by counting and recognizing the numbers on the machine. 

I have such a better understanding about technology now and have learnt that through technology it can help children to visualize difficult-to-understand concepts (Van Scoter, Ellis & Railsback, 2001). Therefore it is a great learning and teaching tool for me, my centre and the children involved.

We had an old VCR player that wasn’t working anymore brought in by a staff member for the children to play with. A small group of children who were investigating it and asked me if they could open it up to see what was inside. I thought this was a fabulous idea that the children had, so I asked them what they would need to open the VCR with and they suggested tools. “What sort of tools?” I asked them as I wanted them to really think about how they were going to accomplish this task and make known to me and the other children their ideas. Smorti (1999) suggests that children need their confidence to develop their own perspectives at the same time as acquiring new knowledge and skills.

We gathered a variety of different tools and the children were able to pick what they needed to open the machine. Hammers, screwdrivers and scissors were the chosen tools and they set out to open the VCR up and see what was inside. I found with this small group the children were all able to work and talk together helping each other. Mindes (2006) also agrees with this type of group activity stating that in small group experiences like these children are able to be actively engaged in learning, developing their learning.

As the children started dismantling the device they found all sorts of things like springs, screws, nuts and bolts and asked me what they were and how they made the machine work. I was honest and told them I didn't know but asked them what they thought. I heard lots of different and very interesting ideas and theories about how these items made the machine work. Clark (2007) suggest that all young children have lively and active minds which really should through in this experience.
 I remember as a child when we got out first VCR I was fascinated with it and wondered how it worked and played my movies. To open one up and to see the mechanics of it showed me what an intricate piece of technology it was. I learnt a lot from this experience as well and our small group discussed how we thought the different parts worked in the machine. I could see the children were so involved in working out the technicalities of it. “Graphics and other forms of visual representation offer important tools for exploration and communication” (Ministry of Education, 2007).

I found this type of activity great for the children’s fine motor skills as they had to unscrew tiny screws, nuts and bolts and use their strength and muscles to cut through tough wires and cords. Through this type of activity children develop increasing control over their bodies including development of fine motor skills, gross motor skills and manipulative skills (Ministry of Education, 1996).

It was interesting to think about how technology has changed so much from when I was a young child and only being able to watch movies on a VCR. Nowadays we are able to use computers, DVD players, iPads and iPods to watch movies which is incredible and some children have never heard of or seen a piece of old technology like this.

Cash register


The cash register

 


Recently we had an old electronic cash register given to the centre which was still in great working condition. The children were fascinated with it and were so keen to have a turn with it. I asked them “what do we need to do to make the cash register work?” C. said “we need to plug it into the power then we can turn the machine on and push the buttons and make the money tray pop out”. So the group tried C’s theory out and the cash register came to life.
Next a shop was set up as the group wanted to be shop keepers. The children made signs for their shop, found things around the centre to sell and walked around the centre promoting the shop.
I liked how it encouraged some of the quieter members of the group to be part of the experience, voice their opinions and ask other children and staff if they wanted to buy something. Van Scoter, Ellis & Railsback (2001) suggest that technology has a place in the early childhood setting as it a great way to further develop language and literacy through the opportunities and motivation it provides.

 O. told me that when she goes to the shops to buy food she sees the people using the cash registers and she likes them and wanted to have a turn pushing the buttons. Ministry of Education (1996) state that through playing in situations like this, children develop awareness of experiences within and beyond the early childhood setting.

I noticed some times that the cash register would jam from the children pressing all of the buttons, however I could see that they all tried to work together to fix the problem with the machine. This links to the communication strand in Te Whariki where it helped the children to try out their ideas and use their imaginations to solve problems (Ministry of Education, 1996).

I loved to watch the children playing with this cash register and I would often get asked if I would like to buy something at the shop. I would give them my pretend money and we would work out together how much change I needed. It was an excellent activity to further develop mathematical skills. Friedman (2005) suggests that early childhood education students should take advantage of the learning opportunities that come up each and every day in children’s lives.

 

When I was a child, I always wanted to play with a cash register as it looked like so much fun pushing the buttons and watching the money tray come out. It was a fantastic experience for all involved and the cash register is often brought out and set up for the children to role play and continue their technology development. I could also see the benefits of children further developing their fine motor and manipulative skills with the small keys their fingers pushed. Ministry of Education (1996) also agree that through exploration children can gain increasing motor and manipulative control from this type of activity.

Recently at our centre we have been discussing clocks, time and some of the significant times in our day at pre-school such as arriving at 9 am, lunch time at 12pm and home time at 3pm. Gonzalez-Mena (1998) also agree with this stating that teachers can help children learn and begin to understand about time by using  points throughout the day with time.

Today I was at the carpentry table with a group of children and I noticed B. was trying to saw through a piece of wood. I asked B how long he thought it would take him to get right through the wood. B shrugged his shoulders and said “I don’t know”. I suggested to him that we could time him using the clock. He seemed quite excited about this idea and pointed to the outside clock telling me we could use that one. I was surprised that he was even aware of a clock being on the wall outside as it is used by the teachers and I thought it was great that B. was aware of the clock. I thought this was an opportunity to take advantages of an awesome learning experience that happen every day in children’s lives

(Friedman, 2005). He asked if he could take a photo of the clock before he started and he started his task.

Halfway through his task B. had a rest and looked at the clock to see how long it had taken him. B asked me to count the numbers on the clock. We counted together and I explained to him that he had been sawing for 5 minutes. This links to the communication strand in Te Whariki stating that children can develop experiences with some of the technology and resources for mathematics (Ministry of Education, 1996). He took a photo of his half way point and he seemed so determined to finish it. I enjoyed watching B. doing this activity as I could see he really wanted to get to the end of his task he originally set out to do. His perseverance was awesome!  

Another child E. was now interested in what was happening and was also encouraging B. to keep going.  Finally he was nearly through to the other side of the wood and the look on his face when he made it through was great, as he looked so pleased with himself.  “Young children begin to understand the larger world through their understanding of themselves and their experiences” (Mindes, 2006).

 We then went to check the time on the clock and B took the last time photo of his activity and together we worked out that he took 10 minutes to saw through the wood.

Ministry of Education (1996) suggests that children develop the ability to enquire and explore their own working theories about the material world around them. Through this experience I believe opened up another way of learning for the children through technology.
 After B. had finished E. wanted to have a turn doing the same thing, which turned into an awesome teaching and learning experience for the children using a clock. Looking back at this experience I didn’t realize that it had so much technology happening at one time. From using the clock to the tools and also the camera taking the photos of the experience, technology was all around us
